The antibacterial activities of methanol and aqueous extracts of the leaf of Mitracarpus scaber on Staphylococcus aureus were studied. Phytochemical analysis of the extracts was also done. Results of the antibacterial activity studies showed that both the methanol and aqueous leaf extracts were active against Staphylococcus aureus in vitro. The methanol extract gave a range of 5.0-5.8mm zone of inhibition, while the aqueous extract gave a range of 3.5-5.8 mm on agar plates both in the different dilutions used. The result of the phytochemical analysis revealed that flavonoids tannins, alkaloids, carbohydrates (sugars), glycosides, saponins and resins were present.
