A. salmonicida is a gram negative bacterium, which is found in natural conditions in all
strata of water and mud. Quantitative estimation of bacteria collected from diseased fish, bottom
mud and water gave different results. Bacterial samples were collected from Wular Lake and River
Jhelum and ascertained for growth patterns, survival in differential media, and finally antibiotic
resistance. The experimental analysis of the bacteria A. salmonicida, collected from Wular Lake
and River Jhelum, showed variations in biochemical analysis. The bacteria from bottom sediments
showed normal growth patterns even at 4°C on CBB media. This may be attributed to the adaptation
against low temperature at the bottom of river or lake. The current research was aimed at the
study on growth, survival and antibody resistance of Aeromonas salmonicida collected from
water and mud samples of Wular Lake and River Jhelum. The bacterial strains showed variations
in biochemical analysis when compared to Bergey’s Manual as per Austin and Austin, 1996. The
bacteria also showed variations to resistance and susceptibility to 14 antibiotics used during the
current study.
